LUKOIL EXTRACTS RUSSIA'S FIRST CASPIAN OIL

First oil was extracted today at the Yu. Korchagin field in the Russian offshore of the Caspian Sea.

Vladimir Putin, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, participated in the ceremony dedicated to the commissioning of this field.

The Yu. Korchagin field was discovered by LUKOIL in 2000. Its 3Р category hydrocarbon reserves exceed 270 million BOE. The maximum expected output is 2.5 million tons of oil and 1 billion cubic meters of gas annually. Between 2004 and 2009, LUKOIL invested a total of RUR 34.4 billion into field development. The Company expects to extract 343 thousand tons of oil till the end of the year.

The field's infrastructure includes the following facilities:

  • An ice-resistant stationary platform (IRP-1) equipped with a drilling complex that has a loading capacity of 560 tons to drill wells 7,400 meters deep. The number of wells is 30. IRP-1 was constructed at the Astrakhansky Korabel plant.
  • An additional ice-resistant stationary platform (IRP-2) for personnel accommodation. The living quarters can accommodate 105 people. Operation in the autonomous mode can reach 15 days. IRP-2 was constructed at ООО LUKOIL-Kaliningradmorneft's plant.
  • A subsea pipeline with a length of 58 kilometers, diameter of 300 millimeters, and a wall thickness of 16 millimeters.
  • A floating storage unit. The deadweight is 28,000 tons. It carries a crew of 25 men. The floating storage unit is mounted outside of the Caspian ice zone.

Oil will be transported from the area by shuttle tankers with deadweight of six to twelve thousand tons.

At the moment the third well is being drilled for water injection in order to maintain the formation pressure. The first well was drilled for oil extraction and the second one for extraction of associated gas that will be used for autonomous power supply to the facility.

The Company implemented a unique for Russia engineering and technological solution, which is drilling horizontal wells with a length exceeding 5 kilometers. Due to a regular radial location of the wells, it is possible to simultaneously drill in all productive formations. Monitoring of the drilling process is also conducted from the shore via satellite channel in the on-line mode.

During an oilfield construction LUKOIL conducted satellite monitoring of the northern part of the Caspian Sea. The satellite data were received by the Company's specialists in the quasi-real mode via the webservice LUKOIL-Kosmosnimki. The monitoring revealed no evidence of oil spills within the boundaries of the Company's license areas during the whole monitoring period.

Varyoganneftegaz Will Drill 100 New Wells in 2010

About 100 new wells are to be drilled at the Varyoganneftegaz fields in 2010. "The Company has not achieved such drilling rates for a long time", said Sergey Karavaev, General Director of Varyoganneftegaz. At a conservative estimate, this will bring ca. 450,000 extra tons of crude to the subsidiary.

About 11 drilling rigs are currently operated at the oil fields. Nine out of them are used for development drilling, and two rigs are installed at exploration wells.

Apart from traditional areas where proactive construction of new wells is underway, Ven-Yoganskoe and Severo-Khokhryakovskoe fields where operations used to be suspended are currently involved in exploration activities. Good performance of exploratory wells has confirmed availability of hydrocarbon reserves at the Verkhne-Kolik-Yoganskoe field. It is worth noting that oilmen now have to deal with hard-to-recover reserves. In order to decide upon feasibility of developing this or that site, profound geological and seismic studies are conducted. But all prospecting and exploration costs are worthwhile. This tactics is applied at all fields of the Varyoganneftegaz Target Subsidiary.

First true Arctic-ready 3D seismic vessel named

Polarcus Limited (OAX: PLCS) today held the naming ceremony for the Company's third and most sophisticated 3D seismic vessel yet, POLARCUS ASIMA. The ceremony was held at the Drydocks World - Dubai shipyard in the United Arab Emirates and was attended by over 200 local and international guests.

POLARCUS ASIMA is a purpose-built 12 streamer 3D seismic vessel of the latest ULSTEIN SX134 design and the largest vessel in the Company's fleet with an overall length of 92m and a beam of 21m. POLARCUS ASIMA is also the first true Arctic-ready 3D seismic vessel in the industry with an ICE-1A class notation from DNV, double hull and an advanced ballast water treatment system that eliminates the risk of introducing invasive species into fragile ecosystems such as those found in the Arctic. The vessel has a maximum speed of 15 knots and is capable of deploying 12 streamers of 9,000m length at 100m separation.

The name Asima is derived from the Arabic female name meaning 'protector' to reflect the vessels low environmental footprint and associated advanced features designed to safeguard the environment in the harshest of operating conditions.

Rolf Ronningen, CEO Polarcus, expressed in his welcome speech Polarcus's gratitude to the shipyard and to all involved in the project, before commenting: "We are proud to introduce the world's first true Arctic-ready 12 streamer seismic vessel to the industry. Her advanced hull design and incorporated maritime technologies will ensure that POLARCUS ASIMA will be one of the safest and cleanest seismic vessels in the industry for years to come, whether operating in the harsh Arctic environment where her high ice class will be critical for her safe operation, or the environmentally sensitive sea areas of Australia and Brazil where her sophisticated environmental features will come into their own."

Mrs. Mary Taylor, wife of Polarcus Board Member and Drydocks World-Dubai CEO Geoff Taylor, delivered the blessing and assumed the role of Godmother to POLARCUS ASIMA.
