Oil & Gas NewsTuesday, 13 April 2010 Making Progress Possible - Caterpillar retains presence at Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2010 exhibitionCaterpillar Global Petroleum will again present a full range of products and services at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) at booth number 3341 in Hall C. OTC is this year's most important international petroleum trade show, being held at Reliant Park in Houston, Texas, on May 3-6. The Caterpillar Global Petroleum team, which is joining forces with representatives from Cat Logistics and Solar® Turbines, is looking forward to discussing new business opportunities and to welcoming existing Caterpillar customers. In 2010, Making Progress Possible will be the key message and recurring theme of the Caterpillar booth. It describes the commitment to continue contributing to world-wide progress by driving positive and sustainable change. At the exhibition, Making Progress Possible will be demonstrated by showcasing latest advancements achieved in technology, products, and global customer support solutions. Following its successful 2009 presence, Caterpillar will again demonstrate the superior value of the comprehensive Cat® diesel engine product line. A key focus for the 2010 exhibition will be communicating Caterpillar's strategy for reaching stringent EPA Tier 4 / EU Stage IIIB regulations on diesel petroleum engines. In fact, Tier 4-compliant Cat C13 ACERT and C27 ACERTTM engines will be displayed on the stand to provide customers the opportunity to view the upgrades beginning for engines manufactured in 2011. Additionally, with the expansion of offshore customers into deeper waters, Caterpillar Global Petroleum is proud to announce the expansion of MaK branded engines for this segment to provide additional power for offshore applications. Along with technology and new products, representatives will be available at the exhibit to discuss customer support programs and Cat global dealer network, which provide industry-leading support regardless of where the customer is located. "OTC 2010 will provide visitors with a one-stop shop for the whole range of petroleum related services Caterpillar has to offer for the global offshore, drilling, and production segments," said Dave Noelken, Global Petroleum General Manager. "We are very much looking forward to meeting customers and discussing prospects at just miles from our headquarters in Houston." Caterpillar is pleased to announce the introduction of the C7 ACERT®, C9 ACERT and C32 ACERT hazardous location water-cooled manifold engines. Caterpillar designed these engines to meet the requirements of the hazardous location environments often found in offshore applications. These engines are required when running in an application where any ignition source from the engine such as hot skin temp or electrical arching could cause an explosion due to the hazardous chemicals or gases in the environment. The Cat® hazardous location engines can be configured at the following ratings:
These engines meet the most current land and offshore emissions requirements, including EPA Tier 3, EU Stage IIIA, IMO and EPA Marine Tier 2 emissions requirements. Additionally, with the use of the EPA Tier 4 flexibility provisions, the EPA Tier 3 ratings will be applicable for land based applications until 2018. The new engines, which are currently available for purchase through the Cat global dealer network, provide additional cooling options based on the application. Both the Separate Circuit (water-to-air) Aftercooled (SCAC) and Remote Aftercooled (REMAC) cooling system options are available on the C7 ACERT and C9 ACERT engines to increase flexibility and ease of installation. The C32 ACERT features the Separate Circuit (water-to-air) Aftercooled (SCAC) cooling system. These engines represent the next generation in technology for addressing the needs of emissions and hazardous location applications, including these factory certifications:
Cat water-cooled exhaust manifold engines feature water-cooled exhausts and turbochargers to maintain lower engine skin temperatures. Mostly used in offshore applications, the reduced engine skin temperature allows the engine to operate in enclosed areas and around hazardous materials. ATEX safety directives require that engine skin temperatures remain below 200° C (T3). In order to comply, some ATEX configurations come with software to automatically derate engine power to maintain ATEX T3 skin temperatures in all ambient conditions up to 45°C. Check the applicable TMI performance data for specific rating ambient performance and also the appropriate A&I guide for proper engine installation requirements. The Caterpillar custom package solution The Caterpillar custom packaging team offers complete engine/transmission packages for demanding well servicing applications including workover, pumping and fracturing. These Cat packages are designed specifically for optimal performance and seamless integration. Each fully integrated package carries a full Caterpillar warranty on package and components and is supported by the Cat global dealer network. Harouge operates four oil fields as a joint venture between the National Oil Corporation and Petro-Canada. The company explores and produces petroleum from eight concessions in Libya. "Management at Harouge Oil Operations approached Cat dealer Meditrac Libya for a customized power solution to provide electric power for a down hole pump located in Amal Field," explains Lyle Kemper, Senior Project Engineer for Caterpillar Global Petroleum. Amal Field is Harouge's largest oil field that includes eight different reservoirs ranging from a minimum depth of 2300 ft. to more than 12,000 ft (700 - 3700 meters). Amal Field is directly and indirectly responsible for around 400,000 barrels of oil per day, equivalent to around one-third of the national production. For this project, Harouge requested a customized enclosure for operation in a higher-temperature environment. Environment was a key factor for this application. Due to the extreme temperatures, and blowing sand, this solution required a customized container, specialized radiator and generator. Responding to the customer's needs, Caterpillar Global Petroleum and Meditrac provided Harouge with a purpose-built Cat 3508 generator set with a customized desert enclosure appropriate for the high temperature petroleum environment. The rest of the package is completely customized for a 55-degree ambient, dusty environment and includes:
The most customized part of this solution is the sand enclosure. Built to withstand flying sand, the enclosure is equipped with collapsible and motorized sand louvers that can be electronically opened and closed to keep sand out. These louvers filter air and sand, trapping the sand before it reaches the generator set. The sand falls to the floor and can be cleaned out periodically. Also inside the container is the customized switchgear, as requested by the customer. "As the Global Petroleum Division of Caterpillar, our main priority is to support Cat dealers all around the world by building and providing the best and most complete petroleum power solutions for customers," Kemper adds. "We work closely with Cat dealers, and customers if necessary, to provide package flexibility and technical advice to assure they have the best solution for their application. We offer customized solutions that range from a basic engine package to highspec enclosed modules and everything in between."
