Oil & Gas NewsMonday, 8 March 2010 Subsea Well Intervention Services on Electric WirelineWelltec® has recently introduced a new range of services: subsea interventions performed through Riserless Light Weight Interventions (RLWI) techniques. Through RLWI technology, Welltec® provides increased access to subsea wells at one third of the cost of a typical intervention. Oil companies are presented with improved monitoring of their reservoirs, access to more information and significantly improved operating efficiency. In addition, HSE benefits are champing at the bit, including lightweight technology, no heavy lifts, easy transportation, less people on board and the ability to perform operations from small vessels - in contrast to the large and costly moored, semi-submersible drilling rigs required by traditional methods. Welltec® will offer a variety of electric wireline services for subsea wells including production logging, installation of plugs and packers to isolate specific zones, perforations, scale milling and sand removal. World Record Water Depth for Subsea Riserless Light Well Intervention In 2010, Welltec® was part of a team that completed a world record riserless subsea well intervention on 9/32" electric wireline in a gas producing well. The intervention was executed in 2,975 feet of water depth and another 12,000 feet measured depth downhole from a Dynamically Positioned type 2 multi service vessel in the Gulf of Mexico. The Well Tractor®, Well Miller® and Well Key® were successfully deployed on electric wireline through the open water, subsea lubricator and into the well. Case History - Riser Less Subsea Scale Milling in Three Hours In the North Sea, Welltec® has completed a successful calcium carbonate scale milling operation at a record setting time. The job was executed on a subsea well from an intervention vessel as a RLWI. The operator was experiencing reduced production and was not able to run a production log to total depth to locate the problem due to a large restriction at 17,034 ft MD. The Well Tractor® and Well Miller® configured with a novel 5.7" convex bit were mobilized and tagged the scale. Milling continued down to 17,052 ft until there was no indication at surface of milling in scale. The intervention was performed extremely fast: in three hours of downhole operations, 18 ft of calcium carbonate scale was removed. Furthermore, the operation led to a significant increase in oil production. This can be achieved by applying the Well Miller® NPR (Nipple Profile Removal) that offers a new bit design for the field proven Well Miller® system along with hydraulically provided weight on bit (WOB) by the Well Stroker®. This innovative system offers operational efficiencies never seen before in conventional pipe-conveyed technologies, generating huge cost savings and value creation to operators worldwide. The main application for this solution is to increase the well internal diameter through nipple profiles to allow larger diameter intervention products to pass. Avoid Killing Your Wells This new system is the only one of its kind on the market. A major benefit of deploying the new milling system as opposed to the pipe-conveyed methods is avoiding the need for a well kill, which saves time and reduces possible formation damage. The milling system uses the well fluids to cool and lubricate the bit while cuttings are captured on magnets positioned above the bit. Since operations can be performed under live well conditions, the production can be returned quickly or further intervention operations can be performed on wireline. HSE Benefits The alternative to this system is far more costly and complicated. Using traditional methods involves a large footprint for pumping equipment and fluids handling and requires prolonged operating times, several heavy lifts, all of which results in complex logistics. Field Experience The world's first nipple profile removal on wireline was performed in Indonesia, where an operator needed to remove multiple nipple profiles in order to deploy a larger OD straddle packer assembly. In 10 separate wells with 2 Super 13 Chrome nipples in each, Welltec® successfully enlarged with the nipples with two different bits for the Well Miller® NPR. The entire operation was performed in 11 and a half days at total costs less than half compared to an operation performed with traditional methods. The milling system has also been successfully applied to remove restrictions caused by partial liner collapse or kinks within the completion string. In the North Sea, the Well Miller® NPR has been deployed to mill a partial tubing collapse, hich was achieved in only 6 hours. Welltec's Well Completion Products (WCP) will deliver life of well reliability with on demand solutions that delivers well design flexibility to maximize production as the reservoir matures. Well Annular Barrier (WA) First WCP to market is the Well Annular Barrier (WAB), a hydraulic expandable metal annular barrier with a technical specification that far surpasses swell packer or external casing packer solutions on the market. The WAB maintains maximum well bore with expansion capability up to 1.4 times on running OD operated via surface control and has capacity to seal up to 10,000 psi delta P during injection and stimulation operations. The life and performance of the barrier is independent of downhole fluid type. During 2009, Welltec® was awarded a contract for the qualification of the WAB for an ultra deep, deep water high pressure well. The WAB forms part of an integral single trip, frac and pack completion. It was selected for this high value well based on its many advantages compared to external casing packers or swell packer type solutions. Further WAB developments are being implemented. In particular, solutions for wells that experience ultra high draw downs between zones and wells that have ultra high temperature requirements. Future Developments Apart from the WAB, Welltec® will be introducing additional Well Completion Products to the industry, including valves to deliver constant flow into the well and a patch thru patch solution. Welltec company overview Welltec is a rapidly growing international oil and gas services company delivering premium quality solutions. Our services address strategic and financially important challenges encountered by oil and gas companies. We have built a premier track record for reliable, high-quality service delivery. We thrive on innovative ideas and develop cutting-edge technologies that will continue to revolutionize oil and gas production. We provide high-technology services in onshore and offshore wells, including in the most extreme operating conditions (such as deepwater, subsea, extended reach, Arctic, high-yield, heavy oil and unconventional gas environments). We have built a versatile company with multiple services across the different phases of a well's life including evaluation, drilling & completion, production and intervention. We provide services primarily by operating proprietary remote-controlled precision robotic equipment designed and manufactured in-house. Our innovative technologies couple unique, patented designs with manufacturing know-how in, among other areas: electric, hydraulic and electronic systems. Our revolutionary services and technologies are broadly accepted by the industry and have changed the way operators manage their wells and reservoirs. The industry has recognized Welltec's innovative technologies with several awards. We have won the prestigious Woelfel Best Mechanical Engineering Innovation Award and the Special Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation several times. Our track record for continuous technological innovation includes awards for the Well Tractor in 1998, the Well Stroker in 2003 and, the Well Miller in 2007, no less than two awards for the Well Miller RCB (Reverse Circulating Bit) in 2008 and in 2009, the Well Cleaner PST (Power Suction Tool) took home the latest award. How long have you been doing business in the region? We have been doing business in the CIS since 1998. We did our first jobs in Russia at the beginning of 2009 and have now established ourselves in several regions of the country. Do you have specific target markets in the region? (i.e. Russia, Kazakhstan, key regions or market sectors offshore, EOR etc?) We have focused on Russia mainly in 2009 but in 2010, our focus will expand to include more Caspian countries, in particular Kazakhstan. We will work in whatever market brings value to our clients; however, the obvious target is the horizontal wells market. What are your key products for the region and their benefits? Our key services are provided with the Well Tractor, Well Miller, Well Cleaner and the Well Stroker. The entire concept of Welltec is to provide a lighter alternative to heavier forms of intervention, such as snubbing and rig units and in particular coiled tubing (CT). Being able to provide our alternative solutions on an electric wireline, as opposed to CT for example, brings obvious benefits. Less logistics issues, less people on the wellsite, no heavy lifts (everything can go on a chopper for example), faster rig up, rig down and operational running speeds, provide obvious HSE benefits. The bottom line is that we offer our clients faster, safer, more cost-effective interventions and thus reduced risk and costs of production. What potential is there for your products in the market? The potential for our services in the region is huge. For example, many areas either cannot source CT, or afford it, or perhaps logistically cannot get CT to the wellsite. We provide lighter, safer, more cost-effective and faster alternatives to heavier forms of intervention. That offer can bring real benefits to our clients. How do you compare and compete with existing Russian Technology? Our job is not to compete with, but to enhance existing technologies. We are working together with Russian geophysicists on most of our jobs and we appreciate their technologies and they appreciate ours. We work together hand in hand with great results. How do you see the market developing over the next 5 years in your industry sector? We see it continuing to expand as we have only exploited a small area of the potential market. For example 2009, was a very difficult year for the service sector of our industry, but even during this depressed year Welltec continued to grow globally as we have every year since we came into existence in 1996. Do you have any new products being launched? Yes. We launch several new technologies every year to enhance our portfolio and in response to client requests. We will normally do formal launches of these technologies so watch this site for the next launch. Do you have any recent regional success stories? In February 2009, we conducted the first perforating on Well Tractor in Russia. The job was offshore Sakhalin Island. Although this is a standard operation, getting the first Russian job completed safely and successfully was a real achievement. Any further comments? We now have offices or operations in Vankor, Sakhalin, Tyumen, Krasnoyarsk and Moscow in Russia as well as in Baku, Azerbaijan. We have aggressive expansion plans in the Caspian region in particular in 2010 and have several new projects in Russia starting up during the year also. We plan to establish ourselves further in the region and stay a very long time.
