  • A New Large Oil Field Has Been Discovered in Hungary

Hungarian oil and gas company MOL said it had discovered a new field in the central part of the country that could produce about a thousand barrels of oil per day.

“MOL, together with the Hungarian company O&GD Central Kft., carried out successful drilling in Central Hungary, near the village of Tura. The new field currently produces about a thousand barrels of oil per day, OGD and MOL own it in the proportion of 51%-49%. For MOL this means approximately 500 barrels per day, which represents approximately 1% of the MOL group’s average daily oil production in 2023,” the company said in a statement.

In December, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjártó, announced that Hungary would veto the 12th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation if the Hungarian company MOL was not allowed to sell petroleum products from Russian oil in Croatia to the Czech Republic; the corresponding exception for Hungary expired on December 5.

Previously, the Hungarian Ministry of Energy stated that after February 5, 2023, that is, the date of entry into force of sanctions on Russian oil products, MOL will be able to export products only from oil of non-Russian origin from its subsidiary refinery in Bratislava. The company reported that the share of non-Russian raw materials at the Slovak plant is 30%.
