American Baker Hughes Will Support a Gas Project in Algeria
American oilfield services company Baker Hughes announced the signing of a major contract with the largest Algerian state-owned oil and gas company SONATRACH, specializing in the production, processing and sale of oil and natural gas.
The contract is part of a wider order for the construction of booster plants, Phase III – Phase 2, of the Hassi R’Mel gas field, the largest natural gas field in Algeria and Africa, awarded to the consortium of Baker Hughes and Tecnimont, part of the MAIRE technology and engineering group .
SONATRACH is committed to supporting the natural depletion of the Hassi R’Mel field to ensure production levels are maintained at 188 million cm3/day. Order completion times are respectively 33, 36 and 39 months for Central, North and South stations, with commissioning scheduled for October 2026, January and April 2027 respectively.
The scope of the Baker Hughes contract includes the supply of 20 compressor units based on the Frame 5 gas turbine and BCL compressor technology, which will be installed at three gas pumping stations at the Hassi R’Mel gas field.
The Hassi R’Mel field, located 550 km south of Algeria, is the largest gas field in the world, representing a key source of energy supply for Algeria and Europe.
The new gas pumping stations are part of Algeria’s ambitious plan to strengthen its role in the global energy market and its commitment to natural gas as a key source of energy for socio-economic development, the company said.
Production of compressors and testing of units will be carried out at Baker Hughes facilities in Italy.
