  • American Chevron increases gas production capacity in Australia

American oil and gas company Chevron is increasing gas production capacity in Western Australia, according to a company press release.

“Gas production capacity in Western Australia is growing as a result of technical improvements … aimed at increasing the level of production of Wheatstone gas near the city of Onslow,” the message says.

Also, Chevron notes, the capacity of the Wheatstone liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant will increase by 5%. And Chevron Australia Managing Director Mark Hatfield, quoted in the release, pointed to the need for further work in the coming months to further increase production.

Wheatstone is a joint venture between the Australian divisions of Chevron (64.14% share), Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (13.4%), Woodside Energy Group Ltd (13%), Kyushu Electric Power Company (1.46%) and PE Wheatstone Pty Ltd (8%). Chevron Australia is the operator of the entire project. Wheatstone also includes two lines for the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) with a total capacity of 8.9 million tons per year.

Chevron is the second largest US oil and gas company. The corporation operates in more than 180 countries. The company has been present in Australia for 70 years.

Reuters reported on Sunday that Australian unions at Woodside Energy Group’s offshore gas platforms in the Northwest Shelf announced plans to strike on September 2, which could disrupt supplies that cover 10% of global liquefied natural gas exports.
