An Earthquake Occurred in the Western Part of the Republic of Kazakhstan Near the Tengiz Oil Field
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 was recorded in the Atyrau Region in the western part of the Republic of Kazakhstan at 11:44 local time, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
According to the USGS, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 32 kilometers southwest of the settlement of Karaton, and the focal depth was 10 kilometers.
The regional news outlet Ak Zhaik, citing eyewitness accounts, reported that the seismic tremors lasted for approximately five seconds.
Located near the epicenter is the Tengiz oil and gas field, which is one of the three largest hydrocarbon fields in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The field contains proven oil reserves of 3.1 billion metric tons.
As of now, there is no official information on whether the seismic event has affected the operations of the oil field or its associated infrastructure facilities.
