  • BP and RIL Commission MJ Gas Condensate Field Offshore India

    Indian Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and British company BP have commissioned the MJ deepwater gas condensate field (GCF) in the KG-D6 block offshore India.
    This was reported by the press service of BP.

    MJ field:

    • represents the latest of 3 discoveries that the RIL-BP consortium has brought into production on block KG D6 off the east coast of India;
    • the deposit was discovered in 2013;
    • located at a depth of up to 1200 m about 30 km from the existing onshore terminal at Gadimog on the east coast of India;
    • expected production volume:
    • the MJ project includes 8 wells;
    • The development of the field will be carried out using a new floating oil and gas production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) Ruby:
      – the construction contract was awarded between Reliance and South Korean Samsung Heavy Industries in 2019,
      – the vessel with a double hull is designed to process 60 thousand barrels per day of oil and about 12.7 million m3 per day of gas,
      – FPSO’s condensate production capacity is expected to be 30,000 bbl/d and throughput capacity to be at least 20,000 bbl/d, which may be increased;
    • project partners:
      – RIL is the block operator of KG D6 with a 66.67% interest,
      – BP owns a 33.33% stake.

    The commencement of natural gas and gas condensate production at the MJ field follows the launch of the R-Cluster field in December 2020 and the Satellite Cluster field in April 2021.

    Reliance and BP planned to invest about US$5 billion in projects to develop the KG-D6 block.
    It is expected that after the launch of MJ, by 2023, the average gas production at the KG D6 asset will be 30 million m3 / day, which will provide up to 15% of India’s gas needs.

    These 3 projects are critical to BP and Reliance’s strategy to increase production on the East Coast block, where gas production has been declining in recent years. Reliance discovered 19 gas fields in block KG-D6. Of these, D-1 and D-3 – the 2 largest – were commissioned in April 2009, and MA, the only field in the block, was commissioned in September 2008. While production at the MA field ceased in 2019 production at D-1 and D-3 ceased in February 2020.

    The government has either handed over other discovered deposits or confiscated them for not meeting the deadlines for the start of production. The MJ reserves are located approximately 2,000 meters below the D1-D3 gas fields.

    According to M. Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, along with other KG D6 fields, the MJ development does support the Make in India and Energy vision developed by the Indian government.
