China Breaks Its Own Record in Offshore Drilling
China is ramping up offshore drilling as part of its energy security strategy
China’s CNOOC reported that the number of wells in the Bohai Gulf at the Kenli 6-1 oil project increased to 177. CNOOC representative Liu Baosheng said that in less than two years the company drilled more than 100 wells, breaking a record in offshore drilling. In addition, the Chinese Xuanji technology was used on the Kenli 6-1, which turned out to be very effective. The rate of well creation increased by 26.2%, the cost fell by 28.6%.
This Kenli 6-1 oil reservoir has proven reserves of more than 100 million tonnes.
It is worth noting that after the 2021 energy crisis, China has revised its energy strategy. Beijing has decided not to strive for the imposed ideals of climate neutrality, but to improve its energy security by increasing the development of its own hydrocarbon reserves of oil, gas and coal.
