  • Cumulative Gas Reserves in the “New” BRICS Will Reach Half of the World’s

Gas reserves in the BRICS countries (now Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) after the expected expansion of this association will double, to about 50% of all world reserves, follows from RIA Novosti calculations based on statistical data.

Following the summit in Johannesburg, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Argentina, Egypt and Ethiopia were officially invited to BRICS. It is assumed that the full membership of new countries can begin on January 1.

Gas reserves in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa account for about 25.3% of the world’s (47.4 trillion cubic meters), while the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Argentina, Egypt and Ethiopia account for about 24.8% of the world’s gas reserves (46.5 billion cubic meters), follows from the report of the British oil and gas company BP.

After joining the association of new countries, the figure will double and exceed 50% (93.9 billion cubic meters). At the same time, the calculations do not take into account data on reserves in South Africa and Ethiopia (there are no data in the BP report, but they account for less than 0.8% of world reserves with the vast majority of other African countries).

BP experts estimated world gas reserves at the beginning of 2021 at about 188.1 trillion cubic meters. The top three in terms of reserves are Russia (19.9%, 37.4 trillion cubic meters), Iran (17.1%, 32.1 trillion cubic meters), Qatar (13.1%, 24.7 trillion cubic meters). Significant reserves in the BRICS are China (4.5%, 8.4 trillion cubic meters), as well as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (3.2%, 6 and 5.9 trillion cubic meters each).
