  • Daily Oil Production in Kazakhstan has Recovered After the Liquidation of the Energy Accident

Oil production in Kazakhstan over the past day, August 20, amounted to 234.3 thousand tons of oil, according to the materials of the situational and analytical center of the fuel and energy complex under the Ministry of Energy.

As explained in the department, production was restored after the liquidation of the accident at the Mangistau nuclear power plant (MAEK).

As reported, on August 11, a large-scale power outage occurred in the Mangistau region in western Kazakhstan in connection with an accident at the MAEC. The shutdown of two turbine units at CHPP-2 led to subsequent shutdowns of consumers – in the Atyrau power center for 45 MW, in the Mangistau power center for 98 MW. On the same day, another accident occurred: block N3 at the MAEK TPP was switched off with a decrease in load by 147 MW, which led to a limitation in the consumption of electric power by 55 MW in the Atyrau power center and by 35 MW in the Mangistau power center.

After the accident at the MAEK, daily oil production began to fall: if on August 10, the day before the incident, production reached 232 thousand tons, then by August 14 it decreased by 9.8%, to 209.3 thousand tons per day.

As a result of the accident, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan adjusted the forecast for oil production for 2023 downward – from 90.5 million to 89.4 million tons.

As Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev explained, due to restrictions in the supply of electricity, the plan for daily production was not fulfilled by about 12 thousand tons per day.

This is not the first major accident at MAEK in recent times. On the evening of July 3, due to a sharp increase in the make-up on the boiler, power unit No. 1 crashed, which caused a surge in power to the 220 kV transit transmission line Aktau – Atyrau – Uralsk – UES of Russia, as a result of which the emergency automatics worked with the shutdown of the 220 kV Tengiz-Beyneu lines. The development of the accident shifted to the Atyrau power center with the introduction into isolated operation (from the 220 kV transit transmission line) of the power plants of Tengizchevroil (operator of the development of the Tengiz field), NCOC (operator of Kashagan), Atyrau CHPP, Atyrau Oil Refinery, CPC-K, half of the city of Atyrau and districts areas. The repair of the block was completed on July 9, it was launched on the second attempt.
