  • Dopeless® Technology Benefits Demonstrated to Customers in Ghana

Tenaris experts offered a presentation of Dopeless® technology, the dry, multifunctional coating; and a practical session at the Baker Hughes facilities in Takoradi. The event, which was held on September 14 and September 17, allowed 11 customers to have a first-hand experience with the technology.

The trial featured two 5 ½” 20# NK-95 13Cr pup joints with TenarisHydril Blue® Dopeless® connections and two 9 5/8” 47# L80 pup joints with the same premium connection technology. During the event, the connections in casing and tubing sizes were assembled and disassembled up to eight times, proving the technology’s consistent performance to withstand multiple makes-and-breaks with enhanced galling resistance and frictional consistency. Customers observed how the coating withstands these operations without the need to apply thread compounds.

“The more dope you use, the more contamination you bring to the well and the environment. With Dopeless® technology, all dope-associated hazard is eliminated,” said Daniel Martey, Senior Petroleum Engineer from Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

“It would be better if everybody switched to connections with Dopeless® technology. I am going to advise my Drilling Manager,” said Mubarak Ismaeel, Drilling Engineer from Hess Corporation.

During a second stage, the connections were exposed to drilling mud contamination, without degradation of the Dopeless® coating.

Amaja Oilfield Limited, Tenaris’s partner in the country since 2010, assisted with the activities at their Training Center and helped with logistics.

Dopeless® coating is applied in a fully automatic process in the controlled industrial environment of Tenaris’s mills.
