Eni Has Commenced Natural Gas Production at the Merakes East Field in the Republic of Indonesia
The Italian energy company Eni has announced the commencement of natural gas production at the Merakes East field, located in the Kutai Basin of the Republic of Indonesia. The company made the announcement in an official press release on Tuesday, according to a report by Reuters.
This field is part of the East Sepinggan Block, where Eni serves as operator with an 85 percent ownership stake. The expected production volume is projected to reach 18 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.
The extracted methane is transported to the Jangkrik floating production unit for initial processing, after which it is delivered to domestic industrial consumers in Indonesia and to the Bontang terminal, which specializes in natural gas liquefaction for both local consumption and export operations.
The implementation of the Merakes East project aligns with Eni’s strategic focus on developing its natural gas portfolio in Indonesia, in coordination with SKK Migas, the state oil and gas regulatory authority of the Republic of Indonesia.
In a related development, Eni is holding talks with Malaysian company Petronas to establish a joint venture for the management of exploration and production assets in both Indonesia and Malaysia.
Neftegaz i Kapital notes that Eni has been active in the Indonesian region since 2001. Currently, the company’s daily gas production volume in East Kalimantan exceeds 700 million standard cubic feet, underscoring Eni’s significant role in the energy sector of Indonesia.
