Events in Gabon did not Affect the Work of the Oil Company M&P
The events in Gabon do not affect the operation of the facilities of the French oil company Maurel & Prom (M&P), its press service told RIA Novosti.
“The current situation does not affect our facilities, operational activities are going on normally, without consequences for production,” the press service noted.
“M&P confirms that all its employees in Gabon are safe. They were given security recommendations, but at the moment the situation in Port-Gentil, where the company’s office is located, is calm,” the press service added.
The French company Maurel & Prom is engaged in oil production in Gabon, as well as in Tanzania and Nigeria. This is one of the largest oil companies operating in Gabon.
Gabon is a former French colony. More than 80 branches of French companies operate in the country, especially in the mining sector, including Eramet, which is engaged in the extraction of Gabon’s main natural resource – manganese, as well as rail transportation, uranium mining Orano, Air Liquide, Total Energies and others. Their total turnover reaches 3 billion euros. The country hosts one of three French military bases in West Africa, where about 350 soldiers are stationed.
On Wednesday morning, the Gabon military announced the cancellation of the election results and the dissolution of government institutions. The head of the Republican Guard, General Bris Oligi Nguema, told the Monde newspaper that Gabon’s President Ali Bongo Ondimba had been dismissed but would retain all civil rights. According to the military, the president is under house arrest. Later, in a video message posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter) by a local journalist, Ali Bongo Ondimba stated that he was in his residence and did not understand what was happening.
