Four Oil Wells Were Flooded in Western Kazakhstan
About 80% of the country’s oil reserves are located in the Atyrau region.
Four oil wells were flooded by floods in the Atyrau region of Kazakhstan. This was reported by the Industrial Safety Committee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic.
“Currently, four wells are flooded in the Atyrau region. <…> These wells have been de-energized and sealed in a timely manner,” the committee was informed. According to the department, the wells belong to the Embamunaigas and 5A Oil companies.
“The situation in the remaining [oil and gas] fields of the region is stable and is under constant control,” the Ministry of Emergency Situations noted.
About 80% of Kazakhstan’s oil reserves are located in the Atyrau region; large fields such as Tengiz and Kashagan are located here. Due to the floods that began in March, a local emergency situation currently remains in 10 regions of Kazakhstan. About 100 thousand people were evacuated from the affected areas. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called the floods the largest climate disaster in the republic in the last 80 years.
