Gazprom Considered Directions for Development of Hydrogen Energy
The Gazprom Management Committee considered the issue of the production and use of hydrogen, the implementation of export supplies of hydrogen and methane-hydrogen mixtures using the existing gas infrastructure.
It is noted that in recent years, hydrogen energy is considered in many countries as one of the key areas in the implementation of national strategies for low-carbon development. At the same time, hydrogen is a secondary energy resource – additional energy is required for its production, which is reflected in its cost price. Most of the foreign projects announced in this area are being implemented at the expense of government subsidies and benefits, while a common world market for “energetic” hydrogen does not exist today.
Gazprom Group enterprises currently produce over 350 thousand tons of hydrogen using various technologies, which is used to obtain various types of products.
It is important for Gazprom to develop its own technological competencies in the field of hydrogen energy, using the unique properties of natural gas – environmental friendliness and efficiency. In this regard, the company is considering several areas of using hydrogen as an energy resource.
First of all, is to develop innovative technologies for use methane-hydrogen fuel in its own production activities, and the development of innovative technologies to produce hydrogen from methane without emissions of CO 2 and its transportation methods, including, for export.
Large-scale introduction of such technologies will create additional demand for natural gas as a feedstock for hydrogen production.
The issue of the production and use of hydrogen, the implementation of export supplies of hydrogen and methane-hydrogen mixtures using the existing gas infrastructure will be submitted for consideration by the Board of Directors .
