Gazprom International Discovered a New Gas Field in Bangladesh
Gazprom International has discovered a new Illisha-1 gas field in Bangladesh, the company said.
“Well tests conducted on May 14-20 at the Illisha-1 gas well on the island of Bhola in Bangladesh demonstrated a commercial gas inflow with a flow rate of 19.6 million cubic feet (554 thousand cubic meters) per day. The results of geological exploration indicate the discovery of a new gas Illish field,” the company said in a statement.
Illisha-1 is the third well constructed by Gazprom International under the current service contract with Bangladeshi gas producer BAPEX.
Earlier, during 2022–2023, a structural division of Gazprom drilled two gas wells on Bhola Island, the largest in the country, Tabgi-1 and Bhola North-2. Upon completion of the work, they also received industrial gas inflows. The total production potential of the three wells amounted to more than 60 million cubic feet (1.6 million cubic meters) per day, specifies Gazprom International.
Now almost all the gas produced on the island is used as fuel for gas-fired power plants. The issue of transporting gas to the continental part of the country and transferring it to the national gas transmission system of Bangladesh is being worked out, the report says.
Over the past ten years, Gazprom International has designed and built 20 gas wells in Bangladesh under service contracts with Bangladeshi state-owned gas producers.
