Gazprom Nedra: Completes Construction of Russia’s First Unique Well System in Kuzbass

OOO Gazprom nedra has successfully completed construction of the first unique system in Russia, consisting of two wells – vertical and multilateral wells with a large bottomhole deviation from the vertical at the Naryksko-Ostashkinskoye coal methane field of Kuzbass. Geological exploration is carried out by the company for the needs of Gazprom Dobycha Kuznetsk.

The vertical well is designed to produce methane from coal beds by pumping out formation fluid and reducing the pressure in the formation to the level required for gas desorption. A multilateral well (MLT) crosses the vertical wellbore and has a maximum drainage area due to sidetracks. At the same time, for the first time in Russia, a unique domestic-made navigation equipment was used – a rotating magnetic field recorder (RVMP).

When developing the MLT concept and at the stage of developing design solutions, the specialists of the Department of Well Construction Management of the company took into account the research results, the complexity of drilling wells with a large deviation of the bottomhole from the vertical, selected the well design in detail, developed the trajectories of the main and sidetracks taking into account geological surfaces, worked out non-standard solutions to emerging problems, focusing on the experience of construction of similar wells in methane-coal fields abroad.

During construction, OOO Gazprom nedra, together with specialists from OOO Gazprom dobycha Kuznetsk, monitored 24/7 in real time to make decisions on changing the trajectory, taking into account the data obtained during the drilling process. All teams were sent directly to the site to a representative of the Customer’s company.

Vsevolod Cherepanov, General Director of Gazprom Nedra, said: “The Company has drilled a record-breaking exploration well and built a unique system to assess the use of this type of wells at the stage of commercial production of coal bed methane in Russia. The successful implementation of the project became possible due to the detailed study of design issues, the correct choice of equipment, the high professionalism of the employees and the organization of the construction process, as well as the well-established scheme of interaction between its participants. We hope that compliance with the system construction technology will allow us to confirm the high efficiency of wells of this type in terms of ensuring the design levels of gas production ”.

In the near future, Gazprom Nedra plans to build two more demonstration well systems as part of the project for the production of methane from coal beds of the Kuzbass group of coal deposits.
