Gazprom Neft and Rosmorport Expand Cooperation on the Decarbonization of Shipping
Gazprom Neft and Rosmorport have entered into a long-term agreement to expand the use of low-carbon marine fuels in the Baltic Sea. The partnership between the two companies provides for regular refueling with liquefied natural gas (LNG) of ships on the St. Petersburg-Kaliningrad ferry line. For the supply of environmentally friendly natural gas motor fuel, Russia’s first LNG bunkering vessel of Gazprom Neft, Dmitry Mendeleev, will be used.
The high-tech vessel “Dmitry Mendeleev” is capable of refueling ferries all year round. “Dmitry Mendeleev” is prepared for work in the difficult climate of the North-West region and is able to move freely in ice up to 0.8 meters thick. Bunkering of ferry flights with liquefied natural gas will be carried out by Gazprom Neft’s bunkering business operator, Gazprom Neft Marine Bunker.
“Our development strategy involves further expansion of the use of fuels with a low carbon footprint and the introduction of green technologies in shipping. We were the first in Russia to create the necessary infrastructure and start refueling ships with liquefied natural gas. In 2023, we plan to further develop the promising segment of LNG bunkering through new partnerships with Russian shipping companies.” – Alexey Medvedev CEO, Gazpromneft Marine Bunker
Rosmorport continues to provide uninterrupted communication between the Kaliningrad region and the main part of Russia and cope with the increased load on the ferry line. In the course of cooperation with Gazprom Neft in 2022, we managed not only to gain successful experience in the practical use of LNG as fuel on ferries, but also to note its advantages in the operation of ships. The use of liquefied natural gas reduces fuel costs, improves environmental friendliness and safety of transportation.” – Sergey Pylin General Director of FSUE “Rosmorport”
