  • Gazprom Neft: Brings Digital Innovation to Arctic Drilling

The first digital well construction project in Russia to develop hard-to-recover reserves in the Arctic was created by Messoyakhaneftegaz specialists in partnership with Schlumberger. The expert team, using a specialized platform, simulated a full drilling cycle, which made it possible to halve the well design time.

The use of the new software product in the design modeling of drilling operations at the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye field helped the company’s specialists to automate calculations as much as possible and optimize well planning. The results of the pilot project showed that digital solutions reduce the design time of high-tech wells by 50% and help to select the optimal technological solutions for developing reserves in the Yamal Autonomous Region.
“A successful pilot brings the era of digital drilling and full automation of key production processes closer. Today Messoyakha actively uses the capabilities of digital twins, remote control technologies, algorithms for mathematical modeling and machine learning. New well design software products will expand our competence in the cost-effective and safe development of hard-to-recover reserves in Yamal. “

“The project that we have implemented in partnership with Messoyakhaneftegaz is an important stage in our digital cooperation, the practical implementation of the principles of Industry 4.0. Now is the right time to introduce advanced digital drilling technologies. This is not only about better quality or shorter planning times, but also about reducing well construction costs and optimizing workflows at the design stage. “

The Messoyakhsky group of fields includes the East Messoyakhsky and West Messoyakhsky blocks located on the Gydansky Peninsula of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The project is being implemented in conditions of limited access to transport and industrial infrastructure. Licenses for both blocks are owned by Messoyakhaneftegaz, which is controlled by NK Rosneft and Gazprom Neft, the project operator, on a par. The start of the operation of the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye field in September 2016 was given by Russian President Vladimir Putin via teleconference. The total volume of production at the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye field exceeds 22 million tons of oil.
