  • Gazprom Neft will Join Forces with Severstal and EVRAZ to Develop Technologies to Reduce Carbon Footprint

Gazprom Neft entered into agreements with the metallurgical companies Severstal and EVRAZ on cooperation in the development of technologies for the production, transport, storage and use of hydrogen, as well as the reduction of carbon dioxide ( CO 2) emissions in Russia and abroad.

Companies are looking at hydrogen as a promising energy source. Converting part of the infrastructure of metallurgical enterprises to hydrogen will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. At the same time, the basic methods of producing “blue” hydrogen * by processing methane require the utilization of carbon dioxide.

Gazprom Neft has experience in creating a closed cycle of collection, preparation and injection of CO2 into reservoirs. Since 2015, the Serbian companyNIS (a joint venture between Gazprom Neft and the Republic of Serbia) has been implementing a project to collect and purify natural gas with a high CO 2 content from several fields. The resulting carbon dioxide is pumped into the developed deposit to a depth of over 2,500 meters.

As part of the agreement, Gazprom Neft will share with partners its experience in utilizing CO 2. For its part, metallurgists will assess the potential for converting their production facilities from hydrocarbon fuels to methane-hydrogen mixtures, and analyze technologies for the production, transportation and storage of hydrogen.

“Gas utilization by injecting it into oil and gas reservoirs is part of our operations. We have accumulated experience in implementing such projects, and we are ready to offer these competencies to our partners and the market. According to experts, injection of carbon dioxide into reservoirs is one of the tools without which it will simply not be possible to achieve the planned targets for reducing CO2 emissions on a global scale. We want to combine our competencies with metallurgical companies to develop production technologies that reduce anthropogenic impact on the environment, ”said Vadim Yakovlev, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Neft Management Committee.

“Reducing our carbon footprint and combating climate change is an important trend in the coming decades and one of the long-term priorities of Severstal’s sustainable development program. At the same time, we see in this trend not only challenges and risks, but also huge opportunities. Technologies and projects for the capture and disposal of CO2 and the production of hydrogen will rapidly grow in the Russian Federation and the world for the next 10 years, which opens up great potential for our development and even additional income. I am confident that together we will be able, on the one hand, to make a significant contribution to the achievement of strategic national goals to reduce CO2 emissions, and on the other, to realize the potential of hydrogen in the raw materials market of the future, “commented Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal.
