  • Germany’s Wintershall Dea Starts Gas Production at a Newly Discovered Field

German oil and gas company Wintershall Dea has started gas production at the Dvalin field in the Norwegian Sea, the company said.

“Wintershall Dea, together with partners Petoro and Sval Energi, has started gas production at the producing Dvalin gas field in the Norwegian Sea, providing significant new gas volumes to the European market,” the message says.

It is planned that the field will produce enough gas to use energy to heat more than 2 million European households. The expected life of the Dvalin field is calculated up to 2038, including the Dvalin North field, which is under development.

The deposit has been closed since the end of 2020 due to high levels of mercury in the well. Mercury removal facilities were then used at the onshore processing facilities in Nyhamn and Tjeldbergodden in central Norway.

The reserves of the Dvalin gas field are estimated at approximately 113 million barrels of oil equivalent. Wintershall Dea, the operator, owns a 55% stake, Petoro a 35% stake and Sval Energi a 10% stake, according to the announcement.

Wintershall Dea is Europe’s largest private oil and gas company. Works in Northern Europe, Russia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa. It was formed in 2019 as a result of the merger of the oil and gas assets of the German BASF and LetterOne of the Russian businessman Mikhail Fridman.
