  • Hydraulic Fracturing Is Illegal In New York Even With CO2

Hydraulic fracturing is prohibited in the state, even if the water is replaced with liquid carbon dioxide.

New York State has even banned liquid carbon dioxide for hydraulic fracturing (fracking) on its territory. A final legislative ban on this method is due to be approved on March 20th.

Previously, Texas-based Southern Tier Solutions talked about its intention to use liquefied CO2 instead of water to extract methane using hydraulic fracturing or fracking in New York State. By the way, the state ten years ago already prohibited the extraction of hydrocarbons from tight reservoirs on its territory using hydraulic fracturing.

This time, citizens suspected the company of wanting to circumvent this ban by hiding behind a “climate leaflet” that requires carbon dioxide to be captured and buried. At the same time, opponents pointed out that replacing some chemicals with others would not correct the very essence of hydraulic fracturing.

The State Senate recalled that New York is not interested in any hydraulic fracturing. However, Southern Tier Solutions still wants to lease 1 million acres for future drilling. Company representatives stated that using CO2 instead of water would benefit the environment.

But in any case, fracking is very dangerous: in addition to water, the injected liquid includes various types of chemical compounds (for example, cyanides), which form an underground chamber for further pumping of raw materials from it.

Therefore, Texas alone, where the main production of shale hydrocarbons is carried out, has to take the blame for the energy prosperity of the entire United States.
