  • KazMunayGas Allocated More Than 60 Billion Tenge for the Rehabilitation Project for the Uzen and Karamandybas Fields

    The Chairman of the Board of KazMunayGas (KMG) M. Mirzagaliev held a meeting on the project for the rehabilitation of the Uzen and Karamandybas fields. Project budget for 2023-2024 amounted to 68 billion tenge (about 154 million US dollars). This was reported by the KMG press service.

    Participating in the meeting were:

    • Deputy Chairman of the Board of KMG N. Soyunov;
    • General Director of Ozenmunaigas N. Kilybay;
    • General Director of KMG Engineering R. Uteev;
    • 1st Deputy General Director of Ozenmunaigas N. Abdirahmanov;
    • Director of the Oil and Gas Production Department E. Abylkhanov.

    Rehabilitation Uzen and Karamandybas

    KMG’s subsidiary, Ozenmunaigaz (OMG), began the Rehabilitation Project for the Uzen and Karamandybas fields in 2023:

    • as part of the rehabilitation, an additional 23 wells were put into operation in February 2024;
    • previously, activities were also carried out on: hydraulic fracturing (hydraulic fracturing); launching modern installations of submersible electric centrifugal and screw pumps (ESP);
    • more than 100 wells of the enterprise use new modern equipment.

    In addition, in 2024 the following is also additionally planned:

    • drilling 31 new wells;
    • launching more than 200x ESP;
    • use of coated tubing;
    • complex well overhauls (workovers);
    • application of new technologies to improve oil recovery;
    • modernization: workshops for diagnostics and repair of underground equipment, 2 block cluster pumping stations (BCPS),
    • full completion in 2025.

    M. Mirzagaliev instructed the management of Ozenmunaigaz to ensure the implementation of planned activities and oil production targets for the Rehabilitation Project, as well as the production program for 2024.

    Theses of the KMG Board of Directors:

    • in 2023, 17 billion were invested in the rehabilitation project, this year – 51 billion;
    • in 2024, it is necessary to complete all planned activities for the project and pay special attention to the timely commissioning of new wells, the introduction of ESP and the use of coated tubing.

    Increased production

    It is expected that measures to rehabilitate the fields will help increase OMG’s oil production gradually over several years to ~5.2-5.5 million tons/year. As part of the rehabilitation project in 2024, the additional volume of OMG oil production will be 136 thousand tons of oil. The ultimate goal is from 2023 to 2036 – produce an additional 19 million tons. The rehabilitation project will increase the turnaround time of wells, improve the economics of the enterprise and prevent a radical drop in production levels. It is noted that without a rehabilitation project, the period of profitable oil production by OMG will end in the coming years due to the annual decline in production (by 25% over the last 15 years), high deterioration of onshore infrastructure, rising costs to maintain production levels, as well as an excess number of employees.

    Uzen oil and gas field

    • located in the Mangistau region of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on the Mangyshlak Peninsula;
    • is one of the largest not only in the Republic of Kazakhstan, but also in the territory of the former USSR;
    • opened in 1961;
    • put into industrial development in 1965;
    • belongs to the South Mangystau oil and gas region (NGO);
    • this is a multilayer field with a complex structure, oil and gas deposits, which are concentrated in the terrigenous section of Jurassic-Cretaceous deposits;
    • the initial geological reserves of the field amounted to more than 1 billion tons, but the degree of depletion of the field’s reserves is very high;
    • deposits are located at a depth of 0.9 – 2.4 km;
    • in 2022, new oil deposits were discovered at the field through additional exploration; as a result, the increase in recoverable oil reserves amounted to 39.9 million tons.
