KazMunayGas is Implementing New Technologies to Increase Average Daily Production Rate at Mature Fields
KazMunayGas (KMG) discussed the implementation of measures of the roadmaps for technological challenges at the company’s fields. This was reported by the KMG press service on June 30, 2024.
Hard-to-recover reserves
The main difficulties at KMG’s mature fields are associated with the development of hard-to-recover reserves (HTR). The roadmap of technological challenges for KMG’s mature fields (there are more than 70 in total) identifies 12 fields that provide more than 80% of production. Measures to increase the oil recovery factor (ORF) have been approved for these fields.
The meeting reviewed the results of the technologies applied to increase production (average ORF – 38%). A detailed calendar plan for the technological challenges of each KMG production enterprise until 2028 was also presented.
These maps cover:
- preparatory work;
- pilot tests;
- implementation of effective technologies at the fields.
KMG CEO A. Khasenov noted such key issues as:
- involvement in the development of hard-to-recover oil;
- increasing the rate of oil recovery at low-profitable fields;
- increasing the period between repairs;
- conducting research and development (R&D) to implement new technologies.

given the great potential of hard-to-recover oil, it is necessary to scale up the experience of industrial implementation of proven and recommended technologies to increase production at mature fields and increase the oil recovery factor.
It is noted that, following the meeting, specific tasks were set for KMG production companies. Earlier it became known that KMG is preparing a concept for the full-scale development of the Central and Eastern Urikhtau fields. The Central and Eastern Urikhtau facilities are technologically interconnected, and after the launch of Central Urikhtau, the subsoil areas will have common infrastructure facilities. The project operator is Urikhtau Operating, a 100% subsidiary of KMG.
