  • London Advocates Moratorium on Deep-sea Mining

The UK government has supported the suspension of deep seabed mining until enough information is collected to assess the impact on the environment, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

“On Monday, the government announced its support for temporarily suspending sponsorship or licensing support for seafloor metal mining projects until sufficient scientific data is available to assess their impact,” the article said.

It is noted that an expert group will be created to assess the consequences of deep-sea mining.

Proponents of mining metals through seabed mining believe it will avoid the environmental damage caused by land-based mining and will help reduce dependence on China, the text says.
