  • LUKOIL: Arctic Spill Response Technologies Receive State Approvals

PJSC “LUKOIL” received a positive conclusion of the state environmental expertise on the technology of oil spill response on water bodies (marine and freshwater ecosystems) in the Arctic zone using sorbent materials and biotechnologies. The development of the Company received nine patents, proved its effectiveness during pilot tests and can now be applied in real conditions.

A feature of the technology is specially selected strains of microorganisms that can work in cold climates, when the application of traditional methods of localization and collection of oil spills is difficult.

The development of LUKOIL provides for the use of biological products for freshwater facilities and for marine and brackish-water facilities. They do not form toxic compounds in air and water, and harmful substances are also not used in their production. Preparations make it possible to clean hard-to-remove pollution at record low temperatures, which is suitable for the conditions of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.

The use of technology, among other things, significantly reduces the risk of contamination of the skin of marine animals and birds, which is part of LUKOIL’s biodiversity conservation program, which was developed in accordance with the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the safe development of the Arctic.
