MAGE Expedition Reached the North Pole
Scientific research vessel “Academik Fedorov” accompanied by nuclear “Yamal” ice breaker successfully crossed the North Pole.
Marine Arctic Geological Expedition (MAGE) conducts geologic and geophysical works targeting on oil-and-gas prospect assessment of the Russian continental shelf outside a 200-mile zone of the Arctic Ocean. This research results is a part of application program to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (EU).
Uniqueness of this survey is down to the scale of works (exploration area makes up more than 350 thousand sq.km), unprecedented complexity and also it’s notable that in these latitudes seismic exploration is conducted for the first time.
Works will allow to learn a structure of a sedimentary cover and to study Earth’s crust structure in a hollow of Podvodnikov, Amundsena and Nansen, and also on a continental shelf of the East Siberian Sea. The obtained geophysical and bathymetry data will be found for the subsequent of oil-and-gas prospects assessment of a continental shelf outside an exclusive economic zone of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Ocean.
It is planned to finish the expedition by the end of September of the current year.
