  • More Than 500 Industry Experts Took Part in the 2015 SPE Russian Petroleum Technology Conference

The 6th annual SPE Russian Petroleum Technology Conference took place on 26-28 Octoberin Moscow that is being successfully organized by SPE since 2006. This year conference gathered more than 500 delegates from the largest oil and gas and service companies, research centers and universities.

Traditionally, the programme committee chooses a conference motto that sets the tone for the whole conference. This year, taking into account the fact that resources development becomes more anf more difficult, the committee had opted for the quotation from Christophe de Margerie, “The end of the oil era is still far away…”. This has specified the position that the replacement of major hydrocarbon resources, or their complete elimination in the energy mix of today’s world is impossible, and oil and gas companies need to explore offshore, in remote and autonomous fields, in hard to recover reserves and search for the new reserves.

All these topics and even more were covered by the extensive technical programme that became one of the main peculiarities of this year event. Thus, SPE has conducted 22 technical sessions, in comparison to traditional 18 sessions, where 220 specialists have delivered their presentations.

During the conference the delegates visited 3 plenary and panel sessions where they could listen to the reports made by the leading industry companies and universities, including: Rosneft, Gazpromneft STC, Statoil, Total, Schlumberger, Gubkin University, Skolkovo and others.

First day plenary session was opened by the welcome speech presented by Denis Khramov, First Deputy Minister from Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. The first plenary session was dedicated to Development Perspectives and Priorities of the Oil and Gas Industry in Russia and covered the following topics: «Our Industry in a Volatile Environment», «Russia Arctic Development – Challenges and Innovations», «Innovation and Collaboration».

Panel sessions of the second and third days were represented by the topics: «Наша промышленность в условиях нестабильности», «The Vital Role of Collaborative Technology Development and How to Make it Effective for the Industry», «Innovations in Russian Oilfield Industry», «Aspects of Prospecting and Exploration Stages of Unconventional Oil Reservoirs Study» and many others.

The first day was ended by the reception where SPE President Nathan Meehan handed out the regional awards to 13 winners for their significant input to the industry and SPE activities. Regional Distinguished Corporate Support Award was given to «Shell Kazakhstan Development B.V.».

The reception ended by the Halliburton – Reception Sponsor Cake Cutting Ceremony where Dmitry Chasovskikh delivered a speech. He thanked SPE that has assumed the function of banding the industry specialists all over the world. Mr. Chasovskikh has also marked that SPE events become more important and relevant for the companies, specialists and industry, overall.

During the conference SPE conducted 2 round tables, providing the participants the opportunity to communicate and find answers for the questions faced by industry in the region. The problems raised at the round tables were «New Rules for Hydrocarbons Fields’ Development and FDP Design and Their Impact on the Subsoil Usage in Russia» and «EOR Physico-Chemical Methods».

SPE always pays attention to the young generation at its events. The annual Special Young Professionals Session was organized in at the conference. At this session 14 young professionals from such companies Rosneft, Bashneft, LUKOIL, OZNA, Slavneft and others presented their papers.

This is the second time SPE conducts Energy4me Workshop in conjunction with SPE Russian Petroleum Technology Conference. 2015 Workshop gathered 18 school teachers from various Russian cities, who could participate in the hands-on experiments.

On 26 and 27 October SPE held the following topical luncheons: «Exploration Efficiency and Incentive Scheme» and «Clay-Fines-Migration-Assisted Low-Salinity Oil and Gas Recovery: A Formation Damage May Enhance Recovery and Production».

Moreover, in conjunctions with the conference organized three training courses:

    • Geochemical Analysis During Exploration and Field Development.Instructor: Ivan Goncharov, Head of Geochemistry and Formation Oil Laboratory, TomskNIPIneft.
    • Advanced Cost-Effective Waterfloodings. Instructor: Pavel Bedrikovetsky, Professor, University of Adelaide.
    • Geomechanics Fundamentals. Instructor: Nikolay Smirnov, Technical Director, Petro GM

Society of Petroleum Engineers expresses its utmost gratitude and appreciation to the Programme committee, Event-hall “InfoSPace” representatives, technical specialists and translators, sponsors and Gubkin Russian Oil and Gas University.
