  • Offshore Gas Production in Colombia Attracts Oil and Gas Majors

British Shell and Brazilian Petrobras have shown interest in expanding their participation in gas production projects on the shelf of the Latin American country.

Shell and Petrobras are ready to work in Colombia even though the country’s current president wants to abandon fossil fuels and has stopped issuing new licenses for oil and gas exploration.

The country still has 11 active licenses for hydrocarbon exploration. In some of them, large international corporations cooperate with Colombian Ecopetrol. In 2022, Shell and Ecopetrol discovered gas in one of these fields in the Gorgon-2 well.

In 2022, Ecopetrol and Petrobras also found large gas reserves offshore in the Tayrona block.

Today, both Petrobras and Shell are enthusiastic about working in Colombia, which, by the way, is openly discussed at Ecopetrol. Either the Colombian company does not believe in the length of the career of the current “green” president, or he tacitly approves of future work on the shelf, where there are still working licenses.
