Region with the Largest Oil Reserves in Russia Identified

The leader in oil reserves in Russia is the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra, which holds more than 11 billion tonnes of “black gold,” according to RIA Novosti, based on open data.

In total, about 31 billion tonnes of explored and preliminarily estimated oil reserves are recorded in the country. Thus, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra accounts for nearly one-third of Russia’s total reserves.

The region hosts some of the largest oil fields in Russia. Among them are the Priobskoye field with reserves of 1.6 billion tonnes, Krasnoleninskoye1.1 billion tonnes, Samotlor815 million tonnes, and Prirazlomnoye365 million tonnes.

The second place in Russia in terms of oil reserves is occupied by the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, which also contains significant fields. Among them are Russkoye with more than 440 million tonnes, Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye345 million tonnes, and Yamburgskoye275 million tonnes. In total, the region holds 4.1 billion tonnes of oil reserves.

The top three also includes the Krasnoyarsk Territory, with 3.4 billion tonnes of oil. The region includes the Payakhskoye field with reserves of about 1.3 billion tonnes, Yurubcheno-Tokhomskoye500 million tonnes, Vankor (part of Vostok Oil) — 255 million tonnes, Kuyumbinskoye215 million tonnes, and Tagulskoye210 million tonnes.

The latest publicly available data reflects oil reserves as of the end of 2023. However, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, reserve replacement is recorded annually for oil.
