Rosgeo Successfully Completes Field Seismic Surveys in the Kingdom of Bahrain
Rosgeo has completed comprehensive offshore and onshore geophysical surveys under the contract concluded with Tatweer Petroleum – Bahrain Field Development Company W.L.L. in March 2019. The purpose of the surveys was to provide a more accurate assessment of characteristics of the country’s largest oil and gas field with the potential reserves of about 80 billion barrels of oil and up to 20 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The discovery of the field was announced by the Higher Committee for Natural Resources and Economic Security of Bahrain in 2018.
“The successful performance of the contract with Bahrain has provided further evidence that Rosgeo has all the competences required for seismic exploration in transit areas and on the deepwater shelf,” pointed out Sergey Gorkov, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of Rosgeo. “Currently, in line with our long-term strategy, we are actively expanding our portfolio of international projects, including those to be implemented in the Middle East.”
As part of the project, specialists of JSC Yuzhmorgeologiya and JSC Kaliningradgeofizika (Rosgeo’s subsidiaries) performed seismic, gravity magnetic and geochemical surveys across the territorial waters of the Kingdom of Bahrain, including the deepwater shelf and the shallow transit area, as well as the adjacent land. On the shelf, Yuzhmorgeologiya conducted 2D offshore seismic surveys by measuring the common depth point and refraction waves with a total profile length of nearly 1,400 linear kilometers, as well as gravity magnetic studies covering 1,677 linear kilometers. Kaliningradgeofizika performed onshore 2D seismic surveys covering 92 linear kilometers.
The Professor Logachev research vessel of JSC Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition (Rosgeo’s subsidiary) was used for offshore surveys. It was a base vessel for the expedition and served as a signal recorder. Three other vessels were also used: a deep-water source vessel, a seafloor equipment handler and a navigation vessel which determined the location of the seafloor cable.
To perform seismic surveys in Bahrain’s transit area, specialized small-size vessels arrived from Russia: one of them was used for producing signals in the shallowest water areas and the other two for deploying seafloor equipment in the shallow areas. Specialists of JSC Yuzhmorgeologiya and JSC Kaliningradgeofizika jointly conducted a so-called “seamless survey” at the sea-land boundary in accordance with the best international standards.
Note:
In September 2016, during the visit of the King of Bahrain to Russia, Rosgeo and Bahrain’s National Oil and Gas Holding Company (Nogaholding) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on mutually beneficial cooperation in providing oil and gas and geological exploration services.
In accordance with the requirements of the customer, Tatweer Petroleum – Bahrain Field Development Company W.L.L. (part of Nogaholding), a geological statement of work for the project was prepared and approved in late 2018. Following the tendering process, the Tender Board of the Kingdom of Bahrain recognized Rosgeo’s technical and commercial proposal as the most attractive one. Tatweer Petroleum and Rosgeo signed the contract in March 2019.
