  • Rosneft Conducts Stratigraphic Drilling in the Kara Sea as Part of a Research Expedition

PJSC NK Rosneft is implementing a comprehensive long-term scientific program in the Arctic, which includes geological, hydrometeorological and environmental studies. This work is being carried out in cooperation with the leading scientific and design organizations of the country.

In this northern water area of the Arctic, shallow wells are drilled for the purpose of coring for the first time in Russian practice. The core sampled to date is already of great interest for obtaining the latest data on the geological structure of the North Kara water area

Laboratory analyzes of the sampled core will be performed by Innopraktika and the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov. As a result, a complex of analytical studies and laboratory tests will be formed, which are designed to increase the reliability of the forecast of the oil and gas potential of the sedimentary basins of different ages in the Arctic.

Research is of great importance for science and understanding of the geological structure of the Russian Arctic, for assessing the oil and gas potential of the North Kara basin. Field work is carried out in compliance with the highest standards of environmental safety and environmental protection. For drilling stratigraphic wells, technologies are used with no negative impact on nature. The project was preceded by geological expeditions to the Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya archipelagos, a cycle of seismic, gravity-magnetic prospecting, engineering and geophysical studies, as well as the consistent construction of an integrated geological model of the entire North Kara region, taking into account data on the Arctic islands and mainland land.
