  • Rosneft: Discovers a New Unique Gas Field in the Kara Sea

The State Reserves Commission confirmed the discovery by Rosneft of a new Arctic gas field in the Kara Sea and recommended that FGU NPP Rosgeolfond put the field on state records in the author’s version with gas reserves of 800 billion m3.

In honor of the 75th anniversary of the Victory, as well as in memory of the great commanders, the field was named after Marshal Zhukov. According to the current classification of reserves, it is classified as unique.

The field was discovered as a result of prospecting and appraisal drilling at the Vikulovskaya structure (Vostochno-Prinovozemelsky-1 license area). The depth of the well was 1,621 m. In 2020, Rosneft organized exploratory wells drilling in two license areas in the Kara Sea. The drilling was carried out within the framework of Rosneft’s comprehensive program to develop the oil and gas potential of this region.

The project was launched in 2014 by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Drilling of the first well “Universitetskaya-1” resulted in the discovery of one of the world’s largest oil and gas fields “Pobeda”. Its total recoverable reserves are about 130 million tons of oil and 422 billion cubic meters of gas.

In total, more than 30 promising structures have been discovered in the three Vostochno-Prinovozemelskiy areas of the Kara Sea. The results of drilling carried out by PJSC NK Rosneft in the Kara Sea showed a high oil and gas content of these structures, which confirms the discovery of a new Kara offshore oil province. In terms of resources, it can surpass such oil and gas provinces as the Gulf of Mexico, the Brazilian shelf, the Arctic shelf of Alaska and Canada, as well as the largest provinces in the Middle East.
