  • Rosneft is Implementing Large-scale Projects to Introduce its Own Import-substituting Technologies

In 2022, Rosneft received more than 100 patents for innovative inventions. Thus, to date, the Company owns more than 950 intellectual property products that have passed state registration. Possessing an outstanding resource potential, Rosneft actively creates and implements the most significant solutions of the technology age.

The Rosneft Research and Development Unit is Europe’s largest scientific oil and gas center, which includes 30 design and research institutes with a total staff of more than 18,000 people. The total economic effect from the activities of the RPC is estimated at more than 150 billion rubles.

Rosneft is the first domestic company to successfully develop software covering all key oil and gas production processes. In terms of technical characteristics, Rosneft software is significantly superior to foreign analogues at a lower cost. The Company’s specialists have developed 23 unique software products. Licenses for 10 of them have already been brought to the external market, including 9 in 2022.

In 2022, the range of corporate software was replenished with four new products at once. Among them is the RN-Digital Core software package, which has no analogues in Russia. Virtual core modeling allows not only to predict the hydrocarbon content in the reservoir, but also to select the most effective development methods to increase its oil recovery.

Developing the line of corporate software, the Company improves artificial intelligence tools. Rosneft specialists have created a self-learning RN-Neuronetwork system that independently offers optimal options for new well placement, hydraulic fracturing and pre-operational parameters, taking into account the geological structure, physical and chemical properties and the current state of the selected field. With the classical approach, to select the optimal field development option, it is required to carry out thousands, and sometimes tens of thousands of hydrodynamic calculations. Unique software, due to preliminary self-learning, allows you to reduce the volume of calculations at a particular field by a multiple.

The digital transformation of the fuel and energy complex today is unthinkable without machine learning, big data analytics and robotization. All these areas are represented at IT competitions, which Rosneft purposefully and annually holds. The final of the Company’s IT Marathon, the largest in Russia, gathered more than 2,300 people last year. This is twice as much compared to 2021. The geography of participants covered more than 130 cities in 12 countries. Conducting specialized marathons allows finding non-standard approaches to solving production problems, attracting new specialists for cooperation.

Also in 2022, the Company’s specialists developed and patented a specialized robotic technological complex (RTC) for well workover. The patented layout has no analogues in Russia. Its distinguishing feature is the ability to perform operations in a “parallel” mode: the complex will allow you to simultaneously measure the length of the pipe, run it into the well and prepare the next pipe for operation. The RTK is controlled by one person. The introduction of innovation will reduce the duration of repairs by 20%, eliminate the influence of the human factor and reduce the overall labor intensity of the work.

Rosneft is one of the world leaders in the field of geological drilling support. Company employees regularly win Russian and international competitions in geosteering. The year 2022 was no exception – at the finals of the Open All-Russian Championship held in Sochi, the first three places went to specialists from the corporate research institute IGiRGI.

Rosneft is one of the market leaders in the production of catalysts. In 2022, specialists from the corporate institute VNII NP were awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for young scientists for the development of a line of materials and catalysts for the protective layer for oil refining processes.

Catalysts produced by the Company are not inferior to imported analogues and are in demand not only in Russia, but also abroad. In 2022, Rosneft and Nayara Energy signed a contract for the supply of a catalyst for the hydrotreatment of diesel fractions manufactured by RN-Kat. A batch of 600 tons was delivered to India.

Caring for the environment is an integral part of the corporate culture and social responsibility of the Company. In 2022, with the support of Rosneft, at the White Sea Biological Station of Moscow State University named after N. A. Pertsov, a building of flow-through aquarium systems was put into operation. The building serves as a testing ground for testing a biological product that utilizes hydrocarbon pollution in the northern seas. The biopreparation was developed by the Arctic Research Center of Rosneft and Innopraktika.

In 2022, Rosneft conducted a research expedition to the Chukchi Sea. For the first time in the region, to the north of Wrangel Island, shallow geological wells were drilled and more than 300 meters of continental shelf rock samples were recovered. The resulting core is a source of geological information necessary to determine the age (stratification), composition and formation conditions of the Eastern Arctic shelf rocks.

As part of the Ecology national project, Rosneft conducted three expeditions at once to hard-to-reach and little-studied regions of the Russian Arctic. The scientists studied the populations of the ivory gull, the Atlantic subspecies of the walrus and the wild reindeer. The data collected during the expeditions will make it possible to update the modern understanding of the ranges of the studied species.
