  • Rosneft: Mathematical Modeling Increases Samotlorneftegas’ Production by 1%

At the Samotlor field, Rosneft is successfully implementing innovative methods of integrated mathematical modeling for the integrated optimization of oil production at mature assets. The unique technology, tested at 515 wells of Samotlor, made it possible to increase oil production by 1% in 13 months.

Digitalization in all areas of the Company’s activity is one of the key elements of the Rosneft-2022 strategy. The introduction of digital technologies increases transparency, controllability and speed of decision-making throughout the entire production chain of the Company, and also strengthens the foundation of the developing digital economy in Russia.

The digital integrated model developed by the specialists of Samotlorneftegaz, the corporate research institute SamaraNIPIneft and bp allows to process any amount of data, significantly accelerate the calculation of well production potential, including the impact of infrastructure on well operation and, as a result, increase the volume and the efficiency of optimization measures in comparison with the currently applied approaches to solving this problem. When creating the model, the whole set of mutually influencing factors was taken into account, such as the distribution of flow rates and pressures at well pads, flow regimes and pipeline pressures. To improve the accuracy of calculations, the original characteristics of pumps, motors, cable products have been added to the database library.

Based on the results of the pilot project, a decision was made to replicate the technology in a new area of the Samotlor field, which was recognized as potentially promising for the use of a new digital tool.
