Rosstat Reports 2.4% Increase in Gas Production in Russia in April
Natural gas production in Russia in April reached 55.9 billion cubic meters, which is 2.4% higher than in April 2024 (54.6 billion cubic meters), according to Rosstat. The demand for gas was supported by low hydroelectric power generation (down 15% compared to the previous year) and cold weather.
The figure, standard for the industry, consists of data published by the agency on the production of combustible natural gas (“natural gas” – primarily from Gazprom) amounting to 47.4 billion cubic meters (+3.8% compared to April 2024), and associated petroleum gas (“combustible natural gas from oil fields”) totaling 8.5 billion cubic meters (-4.9%).
Gas production has a strong seasonal pattern, as gas is the primary fuel used to regulate seasonal fluctuations in the fuel and energy sector. This year’s heating season initially followed a mild weather trajectory. According to the System Operator of the Unified Energy System (UES), the average air temperature across Russia in April 2025 was approximately one degree Celsius lower than the previous year.
Thermal power plant output increased by 6.6% in March, while other competing types of generation saw declines: nuclear power generation fell by 0.9%, and hydropower dropped by 15.1%.
The production of gas-intensive products such as ammonia (a key component in the production of nitrogen fertilizers) rose by 4.1% in April.
In 2024, Russia produced 685 billion cubic meters of gas. According to the current medium-term macroeconomic forecast, gas production in Russia in 2025 is projected to reach 695.4 billion cubic meters.
