  • Royal Dutch Shell to Withdraw from Development of Three Natural Gas Projects in the Caribbean Waters of Colombia

The British energy corporation Royal Dutch Shell has announced its withdrawal from participation in three offshore natural gas projects located in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Colombia, which were being developed in partnership with the state-owned company Ecopetrol. This was reported by Reuters based on official statements issued by both companies on April 24, 2025.

Shell had initially acquired a 50 percent interest in the deepwater blocks Col 5, Purple Angel, and Fuerte Sur in the year 2020. However, according to a company spokesperson, these assets no longer align with Shell’s long-term strategic priorities. Nevertheless, Shell reaffirmed its commitment to continue supplying Colombia with energy products, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), transport fuels, and lubricants.

On its part, Ecopetrol emphasized the importance of maintaining ongoing operational coordination with Shell. The Colombian state company reaffirmed that its strategic focus remains on offshore fields previously managed by Shell, including Kronos-1, Purple Angel-1, Gorgon-1, Gorgon-2, and Glaucus-1. These assets have confirmed technical and economic feasibility and are regarded as critically important for Colombia’s energy security.

Ecopetrol noted that it is currently assessing potential steps to ensure the sustainable development of these offshore fields and to expand the country’s resource base.

Particular attention is being given to the Gorgon field, whose reserves were confirmed in 2022. The company plans to begin commercial exploitation of this deepwater asset between 2031 and 2032, according to current projections.
