  • Rusgeology Is Embarking on a New Stage of Research on the Continental Shelf in the Arctic

Rusgeology is embarking on a new stage of research on the outer boundary of the Russian continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean. This is stated in the message of the holding.

Rusgeology noted that a specialized drilling vessel Bavenit is leaving the port of Murmansk for the Laptev Sea.

The purpose of the upcoming expedition is to prepare additional geological materials to substantiate the position of the outer boundary of the continental shelf of the Russian Federation in the waters of the Arctic Ocean, the holding stressed.

Rusgeology drew attention to the fact that Russian geologists have been successfully working for many years to study the outer underwater margin of the continent in the Arctic Ocean using various methods, including remote integrated geophysical studies and direct sampling of rocks. All the materials obtained are used to assert Russia‘s right to expand the continental shelf. In total, since 2020, the Bavenit vessel has drilled 38 shallow stratigraphic wells with a total length of more than 4,800 m in all seas of the Russian sector of the Arctic Ocean.

The upcoming expedition is intended to become another significant milestone in the study of the geological structure of the continental shelf of the Arctic Ocean, Rusgeology added.

The works were organized by order of the Federal State Budgetary Institution VNIIOkeangeologiya within the framework of the federal project Geology: the Revival of a Legend in partnership with Rosneft. Rusgeology plans that the work will last until midSeptember 2024 and will be completed in the port of Pevek.

The holding recalled that in 2023, Russia has already received partial approval from the UN Commission for the expansion of its continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean.

However, there are still prospects for increasing the area of Russia‘s extended continental shelf in the region, Rusgeology concluded.
