  • Severstal Steel Solutions Improves Productivity and Quality of Steel Structure Welding

Severstal Steel Solutions is expanding its fleet of equipment for the manufacture of steel structures. The company has purchased a new automated device – a tractor, which allows submerged arc welding.

Welding tractors got their name due to the possibility of independent movement and simultaneous seam maintenance. Previously, employees of Severstal Steel Solutions used similar equipment for joining rolled metal sheets. The new device has additional functions and can weld corner joints, “in the boat”. This, in turn, will allow the production of I-beams with a height of more than two meters and box-section beams using automatic submerged arc welding. This mode is more productive than semi-automatic welding, which was previously used for such products.

“The capabilities of the new equipment meet the demand of our customers for higher quality welded joints. Such requirements are imposed on especially critical structures that must withstand heavy loads. For example, for crane beams of cranes of high loading capacity. For this, among other things, a smooth transition from the base metal to the weld metal is necessary, otherwise the welded joints become stress concentrators. Previously, we were able to meet such requirements manually – with the help of grinding tools, or by involving partners. Now the new welding machine will make it possible to obtain such joints at the enterprise and in automatic mode, which in turn will increase the productivity and quality of welding operations,” says Dmitry Manakov, Director of Severstal Steel Solutions.
