  • Shell and Partners to Increase Gas Production Capacity at Ormen Lange by 50 Billion Cubic Meters

To increase production volumes at the Norwegian gas field Ormen Lange, a consortium led by Shell has commissioned two new subsea compression stations. This step is aimed at accelerating the development of gas reserves supplied to European markets.

According to Shell, the commissioning of the compressors will increase the gas recovery factor from the current 75% to 85%. As a result, an additional 30–50 billion cubic meters of gas is expected to be produced.

Gas extracted at Ormen Lange is processed at the onshore plant in Nyhamna (western coast of Norway) and then exported to European Union countries and the United Kingdom.

“NiK” notes that since 2022, following the outbreak of the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Norway has become the leading gas supplier to Europe, overtaking Russia. To maintain stable supply levels, the country is actively implementing programs for modernizing existing facilities and exploring new fields.

The operator of the Ormen Lange field is Shell, which holds a 17.8% stake. The remaining project shareholders are distributed as follows:

    • Petoro – 36.5%

    • Equinor – 25.3%

    • Orlen Upstream Norway – 14%

    • Vår Energi – 6.3%
