  • Shell to Use Artificial Intelligence in Deep Sea Oil Exploration

Shell Pl will use AI-based technology from analytics firm SparkCognition for deepwater exploration and offshore oil production, the companies said on Wednesday.

SparkCognition’s artificial intelligence algorithms will process and analyze large volumes of seismic data as Shell searches for new oil fields, the company says.

In a statement, Shell’s vice president of innovation and performance, Gabriel Guerra, said the company is committed to finding new ways to analyze intelligence data.

The new process could cut exploration work from nine months to nine days.

According to Shell and SparkCognition, this technology will generate subsurface images using fewer seismic data scans than usual, which will help preserve deepwater features. And fewer seismic surveys will speed up the exploration workflow and save HPC costs.
