  • Sinopec Begins Production At West Sichuan Gas Field

    Chinese oil and gas company China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. (Sinopec) began production at a natural gas field in Sichuan province in southwestern China. The company’s press service reports this.

    West Sichuan Field:

    • located on the western edge of the Chengdu Plain (Chengdu);
    • covers an area of about 139 km2;
    • proven natural gas reserves exceed 100 billion m3;
    • burial depth – 5,700 – 6,200 m;
    • in August 2022, Sinopec received an industrial flow of gas from the field: the daily flow rate of the Pengzhou 5-1D well was 950 thousand m3/day; the field was expected to come on stream in September 2023.

    According to the company, the annual production volume at the field will be 2 billion m3 of natural gas and 130,000 tons of sulfur. The project is Sinopec’s 3rd gas field in the Sichuan oil and gas basin. The company currently has proven natural gas reserves in the Sichuan Basin of almost 3 trillion m3, and annual production volume is 26 billion m3.

    Sichuan Basin:

    • located in southwest China;
    • known for its rich natural gas reserves;
    • consists of 2 main geological formations: Longmaxi and Qiongzhusi.

    Let us recall that in January 2024, it opened a new ultra-deep shale gas field Hexingchang (Hesingchang) in Sichuan province. Proven geological reserves confirmed by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China amount to 133.012 billion m3.
