  • The Economic Effect from the Introduction of Innovative Solutions at Rosneft Amounted to 12 Billion Rubles

At the end of 2021, Rosneft received an economic benefit in the amount of 12 billion rubles due to the introduction of innovative solutions in its operations. The development of fundamental science and technological potential are the most important components of Rosneft’s strategy. Ensuring Russia’s technological sovereignty is one of the Company’s priority goals as a leader in the global energy sector.

Rosneft has created and successfully operates Europe’s largest scientific oil and gas complex, which includes 30 research and design institutes, employing over 20,000 highly qualified employees. The scientific complex made it possible to create a unique corporate system for the formation, management and solution of applied and fundamental problems facing the oil and gas industry.

Rosneft owns over 850 state-registered intellectual property products. The company has its own large-scale corporate line of specialized software systems in the Upstream area. In 2021, the range of corporate software was replenished with the RN-SIMTEP industrial simulator. The software package was created to simulate the movement of oil and gas mixture flows in a pipeline system. Unlike Western counterparts, the Russian product is developed using modern cloud technologies.

The software developed by Rosneft specialists is in demand both in Russia and abroad. The Company has already sold more than 400 commercial licenses for the use of the first hydraulic fracturing simulator RN-GRID in Eurasia to leading oilfield service and oil and gas companies, 140 academic licenses of this complex have been transferred to the Company’s partner universities.

Last year, Rosneft opened the world’s first Geosteering School, designed to train specialists in the field of drilling support. The school was opened on the basis of the corporate Center for Geological Drilling Support (TsGSBS). The employees of the Center regularly win Russian geosteering championships. The company actively uses new methods and didactic materials to deepen the professional knowledge and skills of employees.

Bashneft specialists, together with specialists from the RN-BashNIPIneft scientific institute, have developed AR training simulators based on augmented reality technology, which opens up new opportunities for training production personnel in the oil and gas sector.

Last year, Rosneft held an annual Marathon of IT competitions for programmers. Representatives of more than 700 IT professionals from 13 countries took part in the series of events. Conducting specialized marathons allows finding non-standard approaches to solving production problems, attracting new specialists for cooperation.

Environmental protection is one of the Company’s key priorities and an integral part of the corporate culture. In 2021, Rosneft received a patent for the invention of a “green” drilling cuttings processing technology at the Vostok Oil project. The rationalization project for the processing of drilling waste into a highly environmentally friendly building material has already brought more than 2 billion rubles of economic effect. More than 212,000 tons of drill cuttings have been disposed of at the Vankor, Suzun and Tagul fields.

To produce environmentally friendly fuels, the Company is implementing a number of large-scale projects to modernize its own production facilities. The Syzran Refinery, together with the scientific institute JSC VNIINP, have developed a technology for the production of a new type of marine fuel, the sulfur content of which does not exceed 0.1%. Bunkering ships with such fuel meets all international standards.

Rosneft is one of the market leaders in the production of catalysts. The Company’s current innovative development program is aimed at replacing imported technologies in the production of high-quality petroleum products. One of the main objectives of the program is the transition of Rosneft’s refineries to the use of catalysts of its own production, which avoids the risks of dependence on foreign products. In 2021, at the RN-Kat plant in Sterlitamak, the Company’s specialists produced a hydrocracking catalyst using their own technology. The new catalyst will significantly reduce dependence on foreign analogues.

Rosneft also produced diesel fuel with improved low-temperature properties based on its own unique catalyst. Two types of fuel – winter and arctic – are produced using a sulfur-resistant isodewaxing catalyst based on noble metals, which was developed at the scientific institute RN-TSIR.

In 2021, Rosneft for the first time ever drilled shallow stratigraphic wells in the Eastern Arctic. As a result of the expedition, the scientists managed to build a reliable geological model of the region and assess its oil and gas potential.

Within the framework of the corporate program for the conservation of the biodiversity of the Arctic ecosystems, the Arctic Research Center of Rosneft together with the Institute of Ecology and Evolution named after A.N. Severtsov Russian Academy of Sciences and the Marine Research Center of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov studied the populations of polar bears and the Atlantic walrus subspecies on the islands of the Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya archipelagos. During one of the expeditions, scientists discovered the largest rookery of this walrus subspecies in the history of Arctic research, which numbered more than two thousand individuals.

Rosneft congratulates the Russian scientific community on the Day of Russian Science!
