  • The President of Cyprus Discussed Cooperation in the Development of Gas Fields with the Head of ENI

The parties, in particular, spoke about the results of drilling work at the Cronos and Zeus wells in the country’s exclusive economic zone, the government Bureau of Press and Information noted.

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, discussed cooperation in the development of gas fields with the CEO of the Italian energy company Eni, Claudio Descalzi. This is stated in a statement released by the government Bureau of Press and Information.

“The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi met today in Nicosia to discuss Eni’s activities and future projects in the country,” the document states.

The conversation, in particular, focused on the results of drilling operations at the Cronos and Zeus wells in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Cyprus.

As noted in the statement, during the meeting between Christodoulides and Descalzi, considerations were made on how to “most effectively implement domestic, regional and European energy priorities in the short and long term.”

In August 2022, the Italian and French energy companies Eni and TotalEnergies, jointly engaged in the exploration of natural gas (NG) on the Cyprus shelf, discovered large reserves of blue fuel in the sixth block of the republic’s EEZ. The high quality of NG was noted at a new field in the area of the Cronos-1 exploration well, 160 km off the coast of Cyprus. According to the Ministry of Energy of the Republic, the total reserves of the field were estimated at 2.5 trillion cubic feet (70.8 billion cubic meters). Subsequently, the Cronos-2 well was discovered. Eni has been operating in Cyprus since 2013.
