The ROGTEC Interview: Tony Cranny, Regional Manager Russia, Europe and India, DSI PBL
Please describe your position and role within the company.
Regional Manager, Russia, Europe (East and West) and India, assisting BD Managers in my areas to grow the business successfully.
DSI PBL have been working in Russia now for some years, tell us about your regional growth and how do you see business in Russia for DSI in the coming years?
We have been in Russia for 10 years now, and we have grown, slowly at first from our initial base in Nizhnevartovsk through Halliburton, but now at a greater pace, once the Oil Companies understood the savings we could make them. As Russia is probably the largest Oilfield in the World, with so much untapped resource, it makes sense to be a part of this and we are spreading ourselves through the whole of Russia.
Why should your tool be implemented by operators and service companies?
We were the pioneers of using a Multi-Functional Circulating tool for Drilling, and we are the number one Circulating Tool Company in the World. We have a simply operated Tool that allows the Driller to deliver LCM to the formation, without tripping out of the hole, and also without compromising the expensive tools in the BHA (LWD, MWD and Mud Motors). The tool is also used for hole cleaning where there is low circulation because of tools in the string, and we can open the tool and pump at a higher rate, without exposing the formation to excess pressure.
What is your most recent success in Russia?
Our most recent success in Russia is working in the Usinsk area of Russia for a major Oil Company, and seeing where we were able to be successful in saving both time and money for the company.
DSI was brought by Schoeller Bleckmann a couple of years ago, what does this mean for your regional clients?
Being bought by Schoeller/Bleckmann gave us a much larger base of operations, and we were able to offer a more complete service for our tools. Quality is a large factor in our operations.
You travel throughout Russia extensively, but what is your favourite part of the country?
Without a doubt, it is Siberia. It is the centre of the Russian Oil business, and is exciting and vibrant.
What do you like most about Russia?
The people because of their positive attitude, but also their friendliness and helpfulness. When I first went to Russia, it was difficult because of not only the language but the written Cyrillic. Now I have little of both, it is much easier.
How do you see the Russian O&G market developing in the next few years?
The Russian Oil and Gas market will grow because it has to. The more Russia can become self-sufficient in resource, the easier it will be. New technology has to be embraced by the Russian Oil companies, to reduce the cost of both Drilling and Production. Obviously there is a requirement to enhance or retire some of the older equipment, and Joint Ventures between some of the Rig and Equipment Manufacturers is paramount, so that there is input from the purchaser as to the requirement of the Russian Oil and Gas Market.
