TMK Invited Metallurgists to Cooperate on ESG, Digitalization and Scientific and Technological Development
Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) is ready to cooperate with other metallurgical companies on all topical issues of the industry, including the implementation of ESG principles, digitalization and development of scientific and technical potential. The CEO of TMK Igor Korytko announced this at the 18th International Metallurgical Summit “Russian Steel: Growth Strategy”, which was held at the Volzhsky Pipe Plant (VTZ), which is part of TMK.
At the plenary session of the summit, Igor Korytko noted the main factors that affect the growth dynamics of the steel industry: adherence to best practices in the field of ecology, social responsibility and corporate governance (ESG), the introduction of digital technologies, the development of a scientific and technical base and the creation of innovative products.
The TMK CEO stressed that the company is successfully implementing a global digitalization strategy, which has helped to quickly reconfigure business processes against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. The center for the integration of IT solutions for the creation of new products and technologies is the Scientific and Technical Center (STC) of TMK in Skolkovo. At the same time, the company participates in joint digital projects with other representatives of the industry.
TMK also implements best environmental practices, including with the aim of reducing its carbon footprint. The company’s factories use exclusively electric steel-making production, operating on secondary raw materials – scrap metal. Other comprehensive projects are being implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“Over the past five years, we have reduced our carbon footprint by 5%, with a 3.4% reduction in emissions in 2020 alone. Now TMK is developing a Strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the period up to 2030, ”said Igor Korytko.
He also announced the participation of TMK in the development of hydrogen energy. “We believe that hydrogen energy is a window of opportunity for metallurgists. First of all, for pipe manufacturers, because pipe solutions are used for the production, transportation, consumption of hydrogen. Perhaps these are other solutions than those currently on the market. But those companies that have an appropriate innovative scientific and technical base are able to develop these solutions. In particular, TMK joined the Council of Industrial Partners of the Technological Hydrogen Valley Consortium, is directly involved in work in this area and is a leader in it, ”said Igor Korytko.
According to him, the company is ready to exchange experience and joint development of these areas.
“TMK in all its initiatives is open to interaction with all colleagues and stakeholders. We do not believe that competition between our companies is an obstacle to this cooperation. We must openly interact on such topics as reducing the carbon footprint, ESG agenda, hydrogen energy, digitalization, and the development of science and technology. I invite everyone to work even more closely in these areas, ”stressed Igor Korytko.
The Russian Steel Summit is the main discussion platform for the Russian ferrous metallurgy, organized in 2003 at the suggestion of the Russian Steel Association by the Metals of Eurasia magazine. It is held annually with the participation of leading companies in the industry, their foreign partners, as well as representatives of government agencies, enterprises and organizations actively interacting with the metallurgical industry. Since 2019, the summit has been moved to the regions where metallurgical companies are present.
