TMK Invited Representatives of the Fuel and Energy Complex to Jointly Develop Hydrogen Energy Technologies
The Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) has invited organizations of the fuel and energy complex (FEC) of Russia and representatives of other industries to cooperate in the development of hydrogen technologies in the country. Sergey Chikalov, Deputy General Director of TMK for Scientific and Technical Development and Technical Sales, said this at the National Oil and Gas Forum, which is being held as part of the international exhibition NEFTEGAZ-2021.
Sergei Chikalov noted that TMK has made significant progress in reducing the “carbon footprint” of production. Thanks to the modernization of enterprises, including the construction of modern electric steel-smelting complexes, the company has managed to reduce the amount of hydrocarbon emissions by 2.5 times over the past 10 years and take a leading position in the environment among the world’s metallurgical companies.
Today TMK is studying the prospects for the development of hydrogen energy, including considering technical solutions for the generation, storage, transportation and use of hydrogen. So, at present, experts are considering transporting hydrogen through existing pipelines – for this, hydrogen can be added to natural gas (methane) at a concentration of about 20%. But at the same time, according to Sergei Chikalov, the pipeline infrastructure must comply with the technological features of the new fuel, such as high permeability and hydrogen embrittlement. New technologies will also be required at other stages of the development of hydrogen energy.
