  • TMK: Plans to Reduce CO2 Emissions by 8% by the End of 2023

Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) intends to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8% compared to 2020 as part of a new environmental program. The events are designed for 2021 – 2023 and will require investments of 2.9 billion rubles.

The program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will be implemented at the key Russian production sites of the company: Volzhsky (VTZ), Seversky (STZ) and Sinarsky (Sinarsky) pipe plants, Pervouralsky Novotrubny (PNTZ), Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling (ChTPZ), Orsk Machine-Building (OMZ) and Taganrog metallurgical (TAGMET) plants, as well as at TMK-INOX and Yartsevsky iron and steel works (TMK YaMZ).

The investment component of the program includes the replacement and renewal of equipment for highly efficient, cost-effective modern systems with a higher efficiency. In particular, in addition to installing new and modernizing existing production units, the enterprises will use modern automated systems for industrial lighting, steam supply and heat supply.

Measures that do not require additional funding, in particular, the optimization of the operation of technological equipment, lighting, heating and ventilation systems, as well as the improvement of production processes and the reduction of resource losses, will also bring a significant effect.

“Over the 20 years of its existence, TMK has already significantly improved the environmental situation in the regions of its presence. Today, we are building an updated corporate greenhouse gas emissions management system and striving for leadership in environmental management and carbon regulation. To this end, the company has developed a comprehensive program to reduce its carbon footprint; over the next three years, we will invest about 2.9 billion rubles in it. The approved program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is plans for the medium term. At the moment, we are also preparing a long-term sustainable development strategy for the company, taking into account the principles of ESG, which will take into account the most stringent requirements and advanced approaches to environmental protection, ”said Igor Korytko, General Director of TMK.

In 2006 – 2020, TMK carried out a large-scale modernization of production assets, investments in which exceeded 160 billion rubles. At the same time, 19.3 billion rubles were spent on environmental protection and environmental safety of enterprises. As a result, atmospheric emissions have been halved, primarily due to a complete transition to a much more environmentally friendly electric steel-making production.

Taking into account current trends, the company not only continues to adhere to this practice, but also makes it even more systematic. In 2020, TMK updated its Environmental Policy, which is based on the world’s best practices. The company has outlined three priorities for itself: the use of environmentally friendly technologies in production, strict adherence to the rules and regulations for environmental protection and adherence to the principles of environmental safety at all stages of the product life cycle – from the purchase of raw materials to disposal.
