Two Complex Scientific Expeditions for Rosneft went to the Arctic
Two large-scale scientific research expeditions of Rosneft started from the port of Murmansk.
PJSC NK Rosneft is implementing a comprehensive long-term scientific program in the Arctic, which includes geological, hydrometeorological and environmental studies. This work is carried out in cooperation with the leading scientific and design organizations of the country.
As part of the first expedition, the engineering-drilling vessel “Bavenit” is heading to the waters of the Kara Sea, to the area of the Severnaya Zemlya islands to drill shallow (up to 120 meters) stratigraphic wells. The main task of the project is the selection of core samples – valuable stony material, which serves as a direct source of geological information required to determine the age (stratification), composition and formation conditions of sedimentary cover rocks of the studied shelf areas.

Laboratory analyzes of the sampled core will be performed by Innopraktika and the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov. As a result, a complex of analytical studies and laboratory tests will be formed, which are designed to increase the reliability of the forecast of the oil and gas potential of the sedimentary basins of different ages in the Arctic.
In the northern waters of the Kara region and in the entire Eastern Arctic, stratigraphic drilling is being carried out for the first time. The research carried out by Rosneft is of great importance for science and understanding of the geological structure of the Russian Arctic, as well as for assessing the oil and gas potential of the North Kara basin. Field work is carried out in compliance with the highest environmental safety and environmental standards. For drilling stratigraphic wells, technologies with no negative impact on nature will be used. The project was preceded by geological expeditions to the Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya archipelagoes, a cycle of seismic, gravity-magnetic, engineering and geophysical studies,
As part of the second expedition, the research vessel Geologist Dmitry Nalivkin is heading to the Kara and Laptev Seas to maintain and rearrange the network of submersible buoy hydrometeorological stations. In the north of the Kara Sea, regional environmental studies will also be carried out to assess the current state of the water area.
The expeditions were organized by the Company’s specialists and the Arctic Research Center (part of the Rosneft Corporate Research and Design Complex).
